It feels surreal to live in a part of the world that has been untouched by Covid-19 so far and hearing about all the deaths in the US and the UK. I can't even comprehend a lockdown. We've been fortunate to have a state premier who has shut state borders with any state that has community spread.

We can't do that in the US because people will scream "FREEDOM!!!" and that they refuse to live in a Communist/Socialist society (do they even know what those words mean???) and we have people comparing being required to wear a mask inside Walmart with the Holocaust.

Too much focus on individual freedom at the expense of caring for one's neighbor.

I already had Covid so technically I don't "need" to wear a mask anymore.  But I do because I want to be an example of showing care for others.

Also looking into volunteering at a food bank.

I do love (really love, not fake love) all the young people I see volunteering at the Covid testing facilities.  Almost all of the volunteers I've seen appear to be either late teens or young adults.  It gives me hope for the future of this country.

And yes, I do have hope.  I always have believed the young people will be the saviors of this nation.

I don't get caught up in debates. Last night on the Nextdoor app I recently installed on my phone, users started listing restaurants in my area that opened for inside dining.  It started with the mention of local mexican restaurant. 

Mind you, our state is the epicenter in the country right now and restaurants are closed, but take out only.  We are under a stay at home order and travel restrictions.  Unfortunately, as we have learned, there is no covid police and though it happens, it's extremely rare that any restaurant is fined.

It galled me the attitudes and ignorance of some who defended their rights to dine out and the rest should just shut up, mind our business and look the other way.  Some thought it funny.  Over an over  " there is no proof that indoor dining spreads covid!!"  Well, duh.  But there is no proof it doesn't.   But common sense would tell you otherwise. It's just a bunch of rationalization on their part that gives them the excuse to not have any concern for anyone but themselves.  

The argument over and over "But if grocery stores are open, then there isn't any difference"  I chime in.  "The difference is need vs want.   I need groceries, they are essential.  I don't need to have my nachos served to me"

One woman stating authoritatively, the first 3 week shut down wasn't because the numbers were high.  It was so hospitals could prepare?? Huh?  I told her that my son and I both work in the medical industry and where did she get her information. Legit question.  She came back at with vicious (misguided) lecture. 

My initial contribution was that I saw that the restaurant was open for dining the same I read the local cemetery just received a delivery of refrigerated trucks. 

I had to step away when someone starting with China conspiracies.  It just proves that theory out there, that if you listen to a lie long enough you start to believe it.  This string started last night and it's still going.  

Reminded why I don't debate with crazy people.  I'll just keep my opinions to myself.  Meanwhile 3 close friends of mine are all sick at the same time, one week after going out to  a restaurant on NYE.

I don't really understand this mentality and I wouldn't want to live anywhere where people had this mentality. I'd laugh in the face of anyone who thinks I'm less fortunate living where I am compared to anywhere living in and out of lockdowns and people dying alone on ventilators. 

We've got a month to go until the first vaccinations begin roll out and we've avoided outbreaks and community spread during this entire pandemic. Things could change tomorrow, of course, but that's a remarkable achievement. I can't remember the last time we had a Covid death in my state.

I had to take another stupid COVID test because of exposure.  
 

I can’t wait to get vaccinated.  My group tentatively is set for the end of March.  My mom can get vaccinated next week.  She’s super worried about potential allergic reactions(she does have medicinal allergies). Her doc says yes, you’re good but...she’ll be having it with an epi on hand and I’m throwing a bottle of liquid Benadryl in her purse.

I'm in "Tier 3". They are currently vaccinating Tier 1 and Tier 2A. Tier 2B is next, then Tier 3.

I've never been more grateful to be middle aged!

I think I’m tier 3 as well. But the way things are going around here and vaccines not arriving next week because Pfizer is behind and won’t be shipping to Canada next week.... they want to get all the long-term care homes and all the medical staff done first. Then they will move onto the elderly that are not in long-term care homes. But as I middle-age they probably won’t get to me till probably July or August and could be September. Although in my province they are trying to get to everybody in the province who wants a vaccine by September.

I’m phase 1c.  They are doing 1b starting Monday which is non healthcare essential workers, inmates, adults 65+.  1c are those 18-64 with preexisting conditions.  Then there’s the general public and they hope to start that group by the end of May.  
 

Frankly we have a lot of “leftovers” from the first phase of people who refuse to be vaccinated (along with a tiny amount of people who can’t). 
 

Otherwise 1b would be waiting longer.  I just don’t understand folks.

Wow that’s a long time! 
In Oregon they are prioritizing day care and school employees before the elderly. Which doesn’t make sense. They want to get kids back in school and I get that, but kids can’t be vaccinated yet - only adults. So there is a potential for kids to bring it home to their parents and grandparents...

And that is the problem I see with that plan.

That said, as an educator, I will go get the shot when they offer it to me - which will be anytime next week when they can get some supply in.

Strangely I qualify for the vaccine as an educator before they are offering it to cancer patients.

I have friends that received it - one dental hygienist, two nurses, and one ER doc. So glad for them, they have been on the front lines! Oh, and my 99 year old mom and her caregivers at least got the first dose.

Here it is the elderly in long term care homes and health professionals first . After that anyone over 80 years of age and down in 5 year increments. And MAYBE if you have a pre-existing condition. But good luck . We have already had a stumbling block with Pfizer  not delivering for the next two weeks.

Similar to other plans all over. Except wacky Oregon, who thinks seniors should be farther down the line. Anyhow, if they don’t have any supply, it doesn’t make a difference where you are on the list until they get some in. I’ll get it when they offer it. It may be a while.

Update on my family member and friend.

They had a rough go and I thank god that they are both okay.

My mom's friend had to go into hospital due to covid, she was quite sick and on oxygen, meds etc.

She was nearly put on a ventilator but managed to get better and not need one. She is still in hospital but slowly getting better.

My family member was lucky. Their health is not the best, but they managed to stay out of hospital, although they needed puffers, oxygen, steroids and antibiotics. They are still not over the covid yet, and it's been 2 weeks.

But they are managing.

Both of them had such a rough go though. I can't believe anyone would think this is like the flu or a cold, it is so much worse.

I am not understanding why they would get a vaccine if they had Covid. Surely they had immunity from getting the disease in the first place.

Covid antibodies have shown to only be present for up to 90 days after infection. So I will still need the vaccine even though I had Covid.

And it's not immunity but rather antibodies.

I'm hoping the antibodies I have currently will last long enough for me to be protected until I can get the vaccine. I only have until about mid March.

Exactly. It's unfortunately a bit disjointed as far as continuity of care. First they're at their doctor's or in a hospital or just getting tested or whatever.

Then they hop in there cars for drive through shots like MacDonald's, based on self reported questions .😕

People are panicked and making strange decisions that unfortunately are not medically overseen.
