Humiliating experience...help!

So, I experienced something so humiliating at work. Even if you can't give me any words of advice, I can at least give you a good laugh.

Friday while on lunch, I text my childhood friend about visiting him and his girlfriend who recently had a baby. I was trying to figure out when he wanted me to come over. To give some background, my friend is very inappropriate and doesn't act his age. I should have known better.

Anyways, he sends me a video of what appears to be a puppy. I click on it, and it is a puppy rolling around in the grass - however, moaning sounds came out of my phone! Like it was a porno. As I'm sitting at my desk with two other colleagues in offices across from me. They HAD to have heard. I was absolutely livid and humiliated (I'm a 29 year old female, btw....)

I have all these terrible thoughts in my head like "what if they think I was watching porn at work" but I would hope by now they would know it must have seriously been some sort of joke. I've worked with them for 5 years.

The only thing that is giving me some sense of comfort is the two people across from my office are pretty inappropriate themselves, and often joke about sex and other things. However, I still can't get over this sense of humiliation and fear of what they may think of me. I have even contemplated going to them on Monday and telling them about the "joke" that was sent to my phone to clear the air and hopefully give them a good laugh but I feel inappropriate even bringing it up at this point (I am a pretty shy and introverted person...)

Any advice? Or even a "you're thinking too much about this!" Or "it's not as big of a deal as you think!"

Every time I think of it I feel sick to my stomach.

I never watch videos with sound in public, for that reason. If I really want to, I turn down the volume.

Next time you're all hanging out, kinda mention it casually/jokingly. "Do you guys have any of "those" friends? One of my buddies sent me a cute puppy video that had... well... inappropriate background noise. I thought we were beyond that!"

Just play it off cool.

It really isn't that big of a deal.

I was searching for car parts for my boss one time, and for some reason the search engine returned a gay porn site...one of those sites that when you click the "X" to close the window a new one immediately pops up...over and over. I kept trying to make it stop but it wouldn't, so I finally hard-rebooted the computer.

Another time I had my I-pod plugged into my computer to listen to music. The BIG boss (one of the owners of the company) came over to my desk to go over some billing. Right at that time my I-pod chose to cue up a song that has "shut the 'F' up" as the chorus. Repeated over and over. You should have seen the look on the boss's face! I yanked the I-pod out of the computer, but he'd already heard it. Oops.

Those things happen. It's not going to even be remembered.

Oh man, that's awful. But you are overthinking things. Especially if they didn't look up or come over or start teasing you about it. You are not the only person this has happened to, by far. Or people wouldn't be making puppy videos with porn soundtracks to them in the first place, because your friend did not come up with that on his own. I've worked in offices where someone clicked on the wrong thing and the next thing you know the office is filled with the sounds of well you know. Either fake or for real.

I would probably not say anything unless they mention it. Treat it like no big deal even if your dignity has died a little and chances are good no one else will treat it like a big deal either.

Both of these. Frankly, nobody really cares about that stuff. Those booby traps are hidden inside countless humor cards, and they're just an eyeball roll. Nobody thinks you were viewing porn. They hardly noticed enough to remember it, unless you want to bring it up in some awkward confirmation of how humiliated you really were--by a nothing burger.

Skip that, and forget about it. Everyone else already has, unless they noticed your horror. In that case, if they bring it up, just say, "Yeah, I'm such a pervert..." and that will be the end of it.

I agree with waiting to see if they bring it up and then explaining that you were caught by surprise. If you had accessed it on the company computer then I would have notified IT of the error.

Oh stop worrying about it, I'm sure most of these people have seen videos just like this as there's thousands of them all over the internet. I would just not mention it Monday, if they were sitting across from you and didn't even react I doubt they heard. Just don't worry about it and keep your phone volume down and watch out for videos from that friend at work, I'm sure he would be proud of his joke working.
