Seraphim
Why now, when you can use the extra hours to start the business and get it off the ground before jumping? Extra hours how do you mean? Link to comment
catfeeder
Extra hours how do you mean? You said they've cut your work hours on the job. So why not collect the unemployment while building your business with those hours? Link to comment

journeynow
"Manage your client expectations and this is truly critical to your success. Not only do you want this in detail in writing, but whoever you take on, you want them to sign off on it and keep that in the file. You'll be shocked at how quickly people "forget" the rules." Yes to this. I imagine, Seraphin, with your experience, you have a good perspective on this. I agree to have a written overview up front, and perhaps posted by the door. And maybe gentle reminders by thanking clients for following them. Link to comment
catfeeder
You said they've cut your work hours on the job. So why not collect the unemployment while building your business with those hours? Yes , exactly. .... Great! You can start marketing and signing up kids for a specific start date before 'officially' quitting the current job. You can use up any earned PTO time or vacation or whatever and, you'll have built the right financial transition. You'll need to report any earnings to Unemployment and pause the claim to avoid fraud, but you can at least plan a back-to-back ending rather than harm yourself just for spite. While we all fantasize acting out a dramatic departure from a place that 'deserves it,' that's not usually a beneficial way to ditch a job. Often the 'appearance' of being reasonable is more important than actually being reasonable. Fingers crossed for you, and behave strategically rather than punitively. You'll thank yourself later. Unfortunately, I have no paid time off as contract or paid vacation. I am Holidays sans pay and they let me know this crap while on holidays which I would have not taken had I known. But I have LOADS of free marketing and there loads of mom to mom sell sites etc. I have one mom willing to give me toys , just get them out of her house. It won’t be hard to get stuff or advertise. I can even advertise on our military spouse network and the place I would be leaving because I am entitled to. Link to comment

nutbrownhare
I've come late to this discussion, but from what I've seen here... TOTALLY, GO FOR IT LOVELY LADY! If you need to do anything official then use the time while you're still notionally employed to get everything in place, and then wave goodbye as amicably as you can when you're ready. I've spent my working life alternating between self-employment, being employed full-time and (as I am at the moment) being employed part-time and freelancing the rest. It can be erratic, especially in my specialist area, but if I knew I had the potential market that you have I certainly wouldn't be working for someone else... Good luck! xxx Link to comment

You may find it more comfortable to toot the horns of kids who've flourished under your care, noting their accomplishments. These would either be children of your references with the parents' permission, or otherwise a general list of successes you've encouraged and observed with kids whose names you don't give. It's less about gaining testimonials, although those would be great, but more about discussing your observation skills and ability to recognize specific growth milestones in the development of kids. You are fabulous, so there's no down side to letting people know this! Link to comment
