Why was this "wildly inappropriate"?

I'm not sure if this is the right topic to post this in. Here it is:

On Twitter I asked a couple if their relationship was open. The girl replied to me saying that "was wildly inappropriate." I explained that they have inspired me so much, and when I meet them I would like to give them a hug and a kiss. 

Open relationships are more common than you suspect. But how am I supposed to know unless I ask?

It's inappropriate because it sounds like you don't know these people and you asked a very personal question in a public platform. 

Those are questions for private discussions offline, with people you know very well in real life.

It's wildly inappropriate because it's akin to asking them about their sex life, which is private and personal and nobody's business.

You have autism so you may not have an ability to recognize stuff like that. But yes, asking strangers on Twitter do they have somebody to F them outside of their relationship, is not really appropriate.

Asking someone about sex, sexual orientation, religion, and sometime age, is not appropriate.

If you were to meet an elderly couple, you would either hug them or shake hands depending on what they welcome based on their behavior in that moment.

You wouldn't NEED to ask them about their marital or sexual status.

Well? Just treat any other couple, or any other person, the exact same way.
