Mexican ice cream

We had a paletero man in the neighborhood I grew up in. Just an older dude who pushed an ice cream cart along. For the longest time, I thought I hated all the ice cream he had simply because I was a little kid and everyone who let me try theirs got coconut or watermelon. Then I saw a kid get a cool looking red / orange swirled one which was mango and chile. Became the dude's #1 customer after that experience.

I live in a Domincan neighborhood now, so no more paletero man. We do have an older dude who sits out on the corner with ice and syrups to make snow cones with. Not the same, but it hits the spot when it's needed.

One of the few good memories I have of my father is riding a horse on the beach in Mexico with him and stopping to buy ice cream from a cart with an umbrella. I didn't care for the chunks of fruit in the ice cream but the ice cream itself was fantastic.
