Ole boys network. Disgusting but very much alive.

My uncle got ZIP and walked away when he shoved his penis down my throat while I was asleep with his hands around my throat choking me. Then he raped me . I was 13 this was my introduction to anything sexual . He did this dozens of times over months yet he still got to walk away .

Crappy laws and ole boys network .

OK ,but this thinking leads to victim blaming and the old boy network . So potentially we should think of every man like an animal and not go near them ? Or why is it that men are allowed to drink and women aren't ?

You may not want to hear this, but she should not have gotten drunk. She put herself at risk.

Regardless, the guy should hang for it. Not wanting to be too harsh on sentencing is a travesty. That woman will have to live with that emotional baggage for the rest of her life. Very sad.

- Nope, her being drunk cannot be used as a defense to him raping her. I'm just pointing out that people need to reduce their risk of anything - rape, car crashes, etc. - men or women, young or old, getting drunk to the point of blacking out is not a good idea.

And if a man behaves like an animal or rapes a woman, he should go straight to jail - we don't allow that in civilized society. The attorney or judge or whoever it was that was easy on the guy is an idiot.

I read the police and court report, the whole thing is super strange and disturbing on multiple levels.

The guy was/is a scumbag and will pay for this for the rest of his life. The problem lies in the lack of forensic evidence. With the way sentencing is these days I'm amazed he got that much time on the eye witness testimony, two of which were mildly intoxicated.

In the report he was clearly going up to women and trying for something, and would have probably taken the lack of push back as consent. On the other hand the victim was abandoned by her friends some time before the incident, who had encountered this guy and his actions previously. The witnesses say they say him on top of her, but his pants were up and unobserved at the time they tackled him. So the best he could be gone after for would be sexual assault.

Clearly something very wrong happened here, and some punishment was meted out; but the lack of definitive evidence of bruising etc; this was the best that could be done.

WRONG!!!!!! Wrong on so many levels.

How was she to know that there was a sexual predator lurking about waiting to pounce on the first drunk, unconscious girl he found? No he was wrong. She can get drunk and not have to worry about a sexual deviant trying to get sex from her. I get so damn tired of people who say that. "Well how drunk were you?" or "What were you wearing?" Do you say that to male victims of rape or sexual assault? You're about as bad as that luke character commenting on these posts.

This story is about almost a year old too and actually older since it happened. That Stanford guy should have gotten more. You can blame the judge on that one for his bias toward white privileged men. That's what it was. Because I'm fairly sure I read the judge in that case sentenced a Hispanic man who committed a similar crime to a much harsher sentence.

I honestly don't understand how people can ever argue this was consensual or that it's a he said/she said situation.

I honestly don't understand how someone gets sentenced 3 months in jail for rape.

He got sentenced to six - they didn't have room at the jail so it was three. He has to register as a sex offender for life though I believe.

You'd be amazed at how many sexual predators get away with their crimes with little to no punishment. Google I think Illinois football team? I can't remember where but some white football players raped one of their black teammates. A mentally handicapped kid. They rammed a coat hanger up his anus. They yelled racially charged slurs at him and the prosecutor said that they didn't have enough to charge him with a hate crime nor was it a sex crime.

It happens more than we want to know. I did a review of the court martial publication and all those convicted of sex crimes for 2015 I think. Out of those there were some child sex crimes. The majority of people in Leavenworth for sex crimes - the victims were children. I believe 60%? I'd have to look back. It's pretty disturbing who is out there in the civilian and military world. You don't know until they get caught.

We had a guy in my last unit who was convicted of sexually assaulting his 8 year old daughter and had child porn. In the new articles, it said that in letters he wrote from jail he said his daughter "seduced" him. I didn't hang out with the guy. He did our schools stuff. I got a creepy vibe from him but not a chimo vibe. I couldn't believe it. His lawyer tried to use his military service as a defense for his sentencing. It's disgusting.

Well according to the reports his actions were being noticed and directly experienced by her friends and sister. Who then left her behind. He was actively trying to make out with ANY woman he could, so he was known to be sexually aggressive at the party. I say this not to blame the victim, but to say that we all need to take people on their surface action when in a drunken party. And blackout drunk is dangerous for EVERYONE.

But she didn't know. It doesn't matter if she knew or not. He took advantage of someone who was incoherent and then unconscious. End of story. Wrong. Disgusting. Immoral.

Of course it is. No one goes out intending to get black out drunk. I have been blackout drunk twice in my life. The first time was the first time I had 151. I didn't know what it was. I was TDY and it was a weekend and it was me, a couple other enlisted and then mostly officers. One of the other enlisted gave me the drink. I said what is it. He told me and said just drink it. I did. Then my boss comes over "no don't" but she was drunk too. Last thing I remember is dancing in the club. Next thing I know I'm puking my guts in a hotel room. Months later bits and pieces came back. And one of the officers said he made sure he walked me and the other guy who helped me to the hotel because this other guy was waaaay too eager to take me back alone.

The second time I did I was with someone I thought was a friend helping him and he had vodka. Drinking shots. I was going to say I was done and next thing I know I'm alone, puking my guts in the bathroom. No pants. They were on the floor covered in puke. My "friend' left me and then later I had these weird memories of him on me but they were very vague. He says nothing happened but who knows? I don't. It's possible. He was trying to get in my pants for 4 1/2 years in that unit.

I haven't been drunk since the weekend before I found out I was pregnant at the end of 2013. I've had about four wine coolers since then. Probably all I can handle. I don't have the urge to drink. I don't really want to ever get drunk again. I'm in my mid 30s. It's not much fun and I don't have time. But if I did get drunk and then get raped not my fault if that happens.

Agree.

Witnesses saw him on her. She was unconscious. He was not.

Rape culture ... blame the victim.

There's a time and place to have a discussion on risk management. When Darcy's question was how anyone could believe this wasn't rape, the answer isn't "she shouldn't drink so much." Personally, I'm big on advising against drinking too much, pulling $2000 out of the ATM at 3:00am, not looking both ways even if there's a stop sign. Doesn't seem to relevant to the question at hand, though. And even if it were relevant, I'd suspect the victim here is the last person requiring any sort of lesson.

Personally, I don't know and haven't met a single guy who didn't think Turner should be buried beneath the prison. The debate I've seen has centered around how much this judge's decision (among others) reflect an overarching rape culture. Not really a debate I've ever had an interest having over the internet, though.

I will say I feel awful for the woman and hope that if there is a silver lining in all of this, it's that all the publicity has garnered her an incredible amount of support to aid her in healing after falling [100%] victim of such a heinous act.

I also happen to think Turner stood a much better chance of ever having a normal life again had he simply been sentenced appropriately and served his time rather than having his face all over the media. At least let's hope.
