One day, my mom told me that it was about Marilyn Monroe and that "Norma Jean" was her real name. I figured Elton John must have had a crush on her when he was growing up. Years later, he came out as gay. I realized that he never looked at Marilyn Monroe as a sex object, and that his song was motivated by true sympathy for a fellow human being. That made me really like him. Years after that, when Eminem was getting bashed for being a homophobe, Elton John stood up for him at the Grammy's, in front of everyone.
