So I've had IBS for 6 years and I have been taking this medication called "donnatal" it's the only med that's helped me. I recently found out that it interferes with birth control and can damage the fetus when you get pregnant. I want to get off and tried, but got BAD withdrawls! so I tried to ween off of it but no other meds have worked.

Anyone suffer from this and know of something that works? even when I eat healthy, excersise and don't stress. I am still in horrible pain and constant nausea.

the doctors say they gave me all the pills but I'm sure there is some combo that may work. I was just wondering if anyone has found alternative resources, like acupuncture or any herbal therapy that has helped them. I don't wanna be on my drug because I canno't go one day without it without going into a bad episode. so how would I be pregnant and be on that at the same time? I would be too scared to harm an unborn baby.

without the meds do you have no control in when you have to go to the bethroom or is the frequent just more?

I have control. It's more like I don't go to the bathroom and that causes major pain and if I eat anything, I'll have the opposite prolmem sometimes. But I'm constantly nauseas and in pain without the meds.

look into clove capsules and maybe eating more probiotics.

I hear certain foods (healthy and non healthy) may trigger your IBS and cause the episodes, maybe you should document what you eat to see what might cause it.

Please get off the pharmaceutical meds, your liver will thank you.

I was believed to have IBS, but as it turns out it was something I was eating, a type of food allergy to cheap greasy food and dairy (milk, soft cheeses) and most importantly what I was NOT eating-mostly healthy stuff, like raw garlic, broccoli, fresh herbs, good quality plain yogurt, nuts, etc.

but speak to a health professional and if your conventional doctor can't help you anymore, seek out a naturopathic or homeopathic doctor.

to your health!

p.s. in my opinion, drugs are never the answer.

Thats one of those conditions that is largely or wholey stress related. You should get the stress under control or at least learn to deal with it better. Medications may help with the symptoms but its not a cure.

but there are honestly times when I am not stressing and I'm still sick. like 24/7 sick. I'm not stressing 24/7. I know it makes it worse though! I've definatly noticed that. But I know it's not 100% of the cause.

This is definitely something you need to speak with a specialist about.. Especially if you have plans to get pregnant, IBS can be worse during pregnancy, if your current doctor can't help you seek out others who can offer you treatment that works and doesn't cause harmful effects if you get pregnant.

what kind of specialist though. A baby specialist? a stomach specialist? I'm not sure. But the last thing I wanna do is harm a baby. or my liver.

wow! thats intresting about the foods! I need to talk someone who knows what the heck they're talking about! all the doctors I've seen have basically been drug dealers, not problem solvers.

My mother has Chron's Disease. She sees a Gastroenterologist for management and control of her illness. She safely and successfully had four children while managing her disease - so it is possible.

You could also look into speaking with a nutritionist to discuss dietary components. I had a colleague do a dietary refinement for her IBS. She basically cut out everything for a few weeks and slowly re-introduced items monitoring her symptoms. She identified quite a few trigger foods for herself.

Good luck and good health.

I would read a book by Louise Hay called "You can heal your life"

Very often our physical pain is a manifestation of something we feel deeper inside. If the medical community has not been able to help maybe start looking at alternative health practicioners, accu-puncture, energy therapy, naturopaths etc...

cymbalta, & yasmin. I also take vitamin B6 and D-mannose.

How long have you been on the Cymbalta and Yasmin?

Cymbalta and Yasmin could both be contributing to the IBS.

Obvious if you are going to get pregnant you will need to stop the Cymbalta as well, have you ever been off of it and seen how your IBS responded?

you need to see a gastroenterologist and a dietician that specialises in dealing with such GI complaints. i have Crohn's disease and have found that my episodes are much reduced since i started keeping track of what foods trigger them.

try keeping a food and stress diary, see what foods trigger your symptoms and if they increase during times of stress. as for the constipation, you need to eat more fibre to keep your gut moving along nicely. try and cut out as much dairy as possible, caffeine is a big trigger factor for gut disorders so try to keep it to a minimum.

it may be worth trying an anti spasmodic medication like buscopan or something similar. also, peppermint oil capsules may be of some help but shouldn't be taken if you have indigestion as one of your symptoms.

last of all, try to stop stressing about it. stress = increased symptoms.

hope this helps a bit. feel free to PM me if you want to ask any questions or if i can be any help
