grymoire
My elder brother has Asthma and Breathing Trouble. He has had this from a young age and has suffered a lot. He is going to be 40 shortly. Because of this problem he has trouble holding on to jobs and now my parents are wondering how to get him married (Indian Arranged Marriage). Is there a cure for this disease? Can it be treated at all? Link to comment
Cognitive_Canine
Learn to play the tuba/piccolo or get into running. The only two cases I know personally of people overcoming asthma were done through those two methods. Link to comment

But now he can hardly breathe and not sure how he can actually run. Is that the only solution? Link to comment
renaissancewoman101
I have asthma and I have had it for most of my life. I don't know many people who have outgrown their asthma (maybe as a kid). If you get it as an adult and it stays with you, it won't go away. I keep it under control with medication. I take Advair (inhaled medication) and a few other meds, and I'm good to go. Casperlady
I am studying nursing I can tell you there is no cure for asthma but there are loads of preventative measures and medications so that attacks are minimal is he being treated at all, he needs to see a respiratory specialist if he isnt seeing any and they will be able to give him all the relative information Link to comment

But now he can hardly breathe and not sure how he can actually run. Is that the only solution? He can start with walking. Then move up to speed walking. Then alternate walking and running. He can build up to being able to run. I know two people who have overcome asthma. One played soccer with me and went from using their inhaler once a day at least to only having it for emergencies but not using it for over a year. And the other played tuba and expanded his lung capacity from less than half of the average to over twice the average by learning tuba. The only instrument that requires more air than tuba is picc. grymoire
Thanks guys. I will pass on this info to him. He has dust allergy and that usually triggers Asthma. He has been seeing doctors in India for a very long time but nothing good comes out of it. Link to comment

He has been seeing doctors in India for a very long time but nothing good comes out of it. He could always get allergy shots. They are a little expensive but if it affects his quality of life, they are an option. Is where he lives an urban area? How is the pollution level? Perhaps he could try moving to a different area. I have absolutely horrible allergies where I live. But, at school (which is 13 hours away), I have no allergies. Link to comment

But, at school (which is 13 hours away), I have no allergies. Well he lives in India. The pollution there is extremely high. He actually lives with my parents. He has not had a stable job because of this health condition. My mom was crying on the phone yesterday wondering what to do about him. He is 40 yrs old, only high school education, low paying job, poor health condition... And because of this no girl is willing to marry him Link to comment
Cognitive_Canine
Maybe you can take him in for a little bit. Get him out of the routine. Is he a little depressed? A change of scenary might help. Link to comment

But, I bet if he was able to overcome his asthma that the improvement in his quality of life would just make everything a lot easier and his life would get better in all areas. Link to comment
MD Geist
There is no cure for it. I had it apparently back when I was 12 but stop taking the inhalers when I was 14 because it started changing my mood. Its not as serious though but It made me gain 100lbs in less than 6mons. Link to comment

Being physically fit helps a lot. well he has been going for work only for the past couple of months... before that he just used to stay at home... and sleep a lot because the medications he was taking for Asthma made him drowsy... he certainly does not exercise... i am going to ask him to go for an early morning walk and then start running. FortunateOne
People that don't have Asthma: please note that the disorder is caused by the allergic reaction to foreign contaminant stimuli and temperature of the air and body. Exercise can create more harm then good since it takes a great amount of air respiration to oxygenate the athletic act. I know first hand since last year I collapsed while running with my physical trainer and my lungs coughed up blood after the stressful activity. It took about two months to recuperate from the damage I did to my lungs. Another fact is that the mainstream medication is steroid based and can cause great weight gain during treatment as I can testify to my current weight issues. Link to comment

FortunateOne
I don't think anyone is talking about strenuous excercise. Any form of exercise where the body temperature heats up can set off an asthma attack. This is why healthcare insurance companies don't like to insure asthmatics, certain employers conduct physicals to weed them out and the reason I was rejected from military service. Link to comment

grymoire
So even brisk walking and running would be harmful? As a sidenote, my brother lives in India. We don't have the concept of medical insurance there. Link to comment
