Yes, you did the right thing - because what other option do you have, really?

 

She is free to date whom she wants. The child complicates things, yes, but it's her prerogative. All you can do is get your life in order and do the best for your baby. Even if things don't work out with the best friend, it is not a guarantee she will come back to you. You hurt her quite badly, so she is going to be very hesitant to dive into that pond again.
