why would they put the treadmills so close together if they don't want people talking on them?

i think the place would look like crap if there was a treadmill here and one waaay over there and another in that corner over there. same reason they try and put all muscle group type machines near each other. you don't really see a leg extension machine in the middle of shoulder type machines.

hope you were trying to be sarcastic.

Personally, when I'm working out on the elliptical machines at my gym (not too different from the treadmill), I'm really in no mood to converse with anyone. I'm burning calories and working up a sweat! In other words, I'm kinda busy.

Besides, I'm usually lost in my iPod to talk to anyone, anyway.

I saw a girl working out hard at the gym recently; she had the eye of the tiger. I noticed she was leaving as I walked out and made a comment about her slacking on the machines. She turned around, kinda looked confused, maybe pissed, but after she saw I was joking she laughed.

That's one way around the gym dilema... although I was technically out of the gym at the point.

They also like it when you ask them what marathon they're training for. I love being corny. : )

actually they should probably try facing the treadmills at each other if they want to encourage conversation

Atta boy!! Not so hard now was it? No one thought you were a creep, no one was disgusted by you, and everyone walked away in one piece.

what do you mean ask the girls How? there is no other way to say 'hi' than actually doing it. i mean, don't drag it out with pronunciation and a lifted eyebrow like 'hiiiiii'.

I had the whole "don't talk to strangers" thing drilled into my head for a long time, also my parents (you've probably seen my whinges on my household/upbringing) are very introverted; no surprise with my first line. And never taught stuff about socialising, let alone how to approach a girl. Don't get me wrong I'm not a shy nervous wreck that you have people saying elsewhere on eNA. Maybe just very reserved. More practically to my point, "Hi" in most cases isn't really useful outside of social scenes.

-------

And on that, just re-read the first few pages of the thread, including dragon lady's kinda blunt post on her preferences. I have to say that's how things tend to generally be. They may not be rude, but it's like unless you're at social scenes for meeting people (ala bars, clubs) most people are just very closed off. Yes I'll admit being a rather nice guy to do cold approaches like in the situations listed.

OK so it's obvious that nearly all women will be much more open and probably looking for it in bars/clubs. I don't like the nightlife so scrap those, although when I go with a couple of mates for some quick drinks, well, it's with mates socially. And the girls will be with her friends too. Hmm, on that note even daily stuff has a similar problem. If you are out alone (e.g. I have to shop for some carry bags or just eat) you're a friendless loner (*), if you're with a mate(s) for company you'll discourage them.

(*) even if it's by choice because you know having someone else there is bad

Heh whoops that's a lot more lengthy and strange post than I thought.

Ohh ok I went back and read. When you said "Why make the thread, when posts like the one EQD made, make guys feel creepy when they try to hit on a girl while she's driving?" and just all the stuff around like page 17+, I thought you were placing yourself in this category of guys. I didn't realize that you are one of the guys that's already comfortable approaching girls, so I was just trying to give you a pat on the back for mustering up the courage. I didn't realize you had been that way all along lol my bad.
