The Power of Plan B: Achieving Peace of Mind by Embracing Alternatives in Relationships, Career, and Life

It's a common struggle to try to find the one right answer to any problem. The pressure we put on ourselves to find a single, perfect job, the perfect partner, or the right way of life can be dizzying. But considering life's many possibilities can lay important foundations for peace of mind and contentment.

Most of us don't enjoy uncertainty, but allowing for the possibility of alternative courses can open up lasting sources of comfort and security. This is what having Plan B entails. By planning for potential second options, or even potential third or fourth options, we have almost built-in resilience against whatever challenges might arise. When we don't limit ourselves to a single outcome, we allow our goals to remain alive and viable — no matter what twists and turns come our way.

It can feel daunting to accept that there is no perfect answer for our lives. There can be an element of sadness in just accepting life as it comes, full of curve balls, surprises (good and bad), and uncertainties. But it's important to remind yourself that these unknowns are equally matched with powerful opportunities. With every roadblock comes a new direction, with every disappointment a renewed set of ambitions and hopes for the future.

The power of "Plan B" is not about giving up; it's about arming yourself with the peace of mind that comes from knowing that you're never completely backed into a corner. It means being prepared for anything and not setting yourself up for disappointment whenever challenge arises. It is a recognition that holding fast to a single vision could hamper progress or lead to failure.

Moreover, it takes the pressure off when striving for something ever-elusive — perfection. Perfection — whether a job, a relationship, or other pursuit — can be elusive if pursued too rigidly and relentlessly on one track. Opening oneself up to different paths and possibilities liberates us from being fixated on predetermined outcomes, which can often be accompanied by a load of heartache.

By embracing "Plan B," we are free to explore anything that might bring us joy, space to make mistakes without fear, or simply contentment in existing without trying to be all things to all people. In addition, we can prepare ourselves for anything life throws our way, be it a sudden crisis or unexpected change of plans. And in those moments we find ourselves feeling overwhelmed with the variabilities life can bring, we have a tendency to falter because we don't have the tools or knowledge in place to face changes as they come at us. Having a "Plan B" in place gives us the strength and resolve to ride out our storms without completely dissolving into complete calamity.

Feeling secure enough to accept that there is no one right answer allows us the freedom to explore the many different roads available and find the one that truly speaks to our inner desires and pursuits. Releasing ourselves of expectations gives us permission to relish in life's small miracles and appreciate its less glamorous moments while holding firm in hope that they're ultimately part of an experience that strengthens us somewhat in ways we may never foresee until after they've passed.
