An investor called me for information

I've been receiving phone calls from investing firms to ask me questions about a public company I used to work for. I've been searching, but can't find whether this is legal. I haven't been with that firm for over 2 years, so my information wouldn't be current.

Is it legal?

I would presume it's a scam unless you were a high powered individual in the company (maybe a level below VP at the lowest).

And if you were powerful, then you absolutely shouldn't say anything.

Whether it's legal or not, all you have to say is that you have no up-to-date information on the company and therefore cannot comment. I used to get quite intrusive phone calls from debt collection agencies who were actually after a guy who'd lived in my house a few years before I moved in; I very quickly learned to shut them up without revealing anything which really was none of their business in the first place.

You don't know who's actually phoning you... it may not be who they say they are...

The moment you answer, it's public. It's legal to ask and legal to tell (assuming your contact didn't include a clause against it). The professional ramifications are a completely other matter. I'd be sure not to say a word.

yeah, you don't know exactly who these people are and what are their motives. Plus, why should you be giving away information for free? I think you can just say that you worked there several years ago and don't have any current information to add aside from what is publicly on their website, goodbye.
