A friend of mine who helped me out a bit after my breakup told me a short story about one ex of his. He randomly ran into his ex at the bar once almost 2 years after the breakup (and god, it was a mediocre relationship with a terrible and hateful breakup). All my friend said was that it was nice to see his ex and that he hopes he's doing well, that he's put everything in the past and keeps the good memories as part of who he is today. His ex was very appreciative of that because his ex said they were worry about things being on a bad note.

 

So, I don't think final contact to make things not end on a bad note is a bad idea... however, honestly, wait a couple years or longer.
