I wouldn't worry about random people watching. It sounds like he didn't care that you eyed this waiter to get back at him for noticing someone you thought was hot. In fact he probably didn't notice he glanced at her and didn't notice you eyed the waiter and this competition all happens in your mind. So the day went well. For him at least because he wasn't concerned with who was looking at whom, etc. he was concerned with having a nice date.

so I let my eyes wander for a bit to the waiter. Wanted to give him a taste of his own medicine!
