To apply with residency or without residency?

Recommended Posts

Hi.

I have decided to get my masters. I have found the program I'd like to attend. It offers an online and an in person program. The University is a state school in the same city as my mother's home. I recently discovered that I would not be able to apply as an instate resident, because even though my licence and permanent address are in Florida- I filed for tax as a person living outside the country (I live in China).

Instate tuition is about 10K for the year. Out of state is about 20K.

I'm getting a master's because my degree is not related to what I want to do. No matter where I decide to live, having a master's will give me more options. I have a boyfriend who I am serious about, he's told me in the past he's not too interested in living in America, but in all the places we would both mutually like to live; my current credentials are not really enough to soundly secure me a job... we don't know what the future will bring, but I know that I need to do something to make myself a more attractive candidate in my field.

Options:

1. Go back to my home state

I will have to:

-re-obtain state residency

-find a new job : '(

-buy (or lease) a car

-maybe rent an apartment (if I don't decide to live at home with my Mom).

Pros

More stability living close to family

More job options related to my ultimate career goals

Cons

Long distance with my boyfriend

America is expensive

I like being an expat....

2. Live in Asia, be an out of state student...

I'll have to;

-re-access my budget

-take out a loan

-maybe get a high paying position

(possibly teaching somewhere that requires me to work longer hours)

Pros

Can stay living with my boyfriend

Can save a little money and pay for school

Stay an expat

Cons

Very little free time

Lifestyle cost

If I have to leave my current job, I'll be a little sore about it...

3. Finish my contract in China, go back to America and do it:

I'll have to;

-Convince my boyfriend to come to America once he finishes school

-Find a job in America

-Eventually buy a car

-Get an apartment in my home city

Pros

Save money

Stay an expat for longer

Keep my life the same for a while longer

Get more professional experience

Travel opportunities

Cons

Prolong my desire to get a masters

Stay away from my family for longer than I intended

Delay my career goals

Have to come back to American job market with only a bachelors...

4. Find another online program that is cheap and will allow me to stay here working...

I'll have to;

-Do tons more research

-Maybe take the GRE

Pros

More time to think

Save money

Keep my life as it is for a while

Retain the ability to travel

Cons

Delay my career goals

Put my desire for a master's on hold

Stay away from my family for longer

Might end up returning to America, or going to a new country without a master's...

What do you think?
