tinkerbellkj
So I had to go back to my doctor today because at my 24 week appointment I was told that at my 20 week ultrasound my little guy had "bright kidneys". I was freaked about this for the last 2 weeks, and finally my appointment was today. The babies kidneys are both enlarged. All of his other measurements are good, in fact, he's measuring about 28 weeks (I was supposedly 26w 4d, which I knew was wrong) and weighs 2.5 pounds. But, his kidneys are slightly large. The sonographer didn't explain much and wanted us to speak to the doctor, who appeared to be less concerned than the sonographer, however, she is concerned enough to send us to a perinatologist- the high risk doctor. She said that she doesn't know why this is happening, and that it is more common in males. She said everything is fine and my fluid is fine which means that his kidneys are functional and he is peeing. She also said they are not huge by any means, just "slightly enlarged". I am worried, though. Has anyone else had this happen and if so what was the outcome?? Link to comment
Seraphim
I am sorry. No, that never happened with me.I hope it ends up being nothing other than a normal "blip". I know it is so hard not to worry. Try not to though. Link to comment
sweetpea03
I'm sorry to hear about this. I remember my cousin had something similar, with something about her baby's kidneys, but it all turned out fine. I hope the same happens for you. Try not to worry about it, until you know exactly what is going on. hugs. Link to comment
tinkerbellkj
Thanks ladies. The doctor was realllly unconcerned about it, and said it was a precaution to see the high risk doctor, but naturally when anything is out of the ordinary I worry. Everything I've read says as long as the baby can pee and fluid is normal, it's no cause for alarm. We know a family whose son had enlarged kidneys and didn't pee at all, so they were going to have to do surgery immediately after birth, but then he peed all over the place at birth and he is now 18 and fine. It's just so different when it's your baby and you feel like there is nothing you can do about it. Link to comment
lavenderdove
Remember that there is a 'normal' range, and if they are just slightly enlarged it may mean nothing... they measure everything against a statistic norm, but there can be great variability among individuals. So i wouldn't panic... it could be nothing, or something that is treatable. Link to comment

Just as lavenderdove said, there is a normal range of size. I don't think it is anything bad, and would follow the doctors reaction of it being nothing to worry about. Link to comment
tinkerbellkj
Well, the specialist FINALLY called. I go in on 13th (Thursday, thank goodness not Friday!) for my appointment, hopefully my husband will be able to come as well, I don't want to go alone, and while I'm 150% sure my MIL would come with me, I think I need my husband. Hopefully it's a nothing and I can breath again. I also have to go on Tuesday for my glucose test, I am not looking forward to drinking that wonderful orange syrup! Link to comment

Hope75
Hi, I just wanted to share that when I was pregnant my with my daughter she was diagnosed with an enlarged kidney as well. I was referred to a perinatologist for a level 2 ultrasound. They could tell she was making urine but weren't sure if the enlarged kidney would be a problem. Once she was born we had a follow up ultrasound of her kidney at the hospital and it was fine, and hasn't caused a problem since. She is 18 months old now and a healthy, robust toddler. I hope everything turns out just fine with your little one! Link to comment
tinkerbellkj
Thanks for your experience, Hope! I will be seeing the peinatologist on Thursday, for what I believe will also be a level 2 ultrasound. Praying all is well! Link to comment

I was under the impression that a level II was more like the 3D ones, but I could be wrong. Link to comment

I was under the impression that a level II was more like the 3D ones, but I could be wrong. A level II is not quite as detailed as a 3D, but is more detailed than a regular ultrasound. It just gives them a little bit more information than a standard ultrasound. Link to comment
tinkerbellkj
Well, I just got back and things seem to be good. It's now only one kidney that is enlarged (apparently the sonographer at my doctors never even MEASURED the kidneys at all, the specialist was not thrilled about that!) but only slightly. There is fluid in the kidney and the kidneys are functional. The liver is also healthy. My fluid is normal, at 14, and he's measuring 5 days ahead weighing 3 pounds 9 ounces. They said that it's common in boys and really all we can do is monitor after birth, but I will go back in 6 weeks to check with them again. I do feel a whole better, though! Link to comment
Fudgie
Yeah sometimes it happens! As long as it's not HUGE and the organ is still functioning, it will be okay. I'm glad that you found this out and now you don't have to worry...well, not about that at least! Link to comment
Seraphim
I am happy your little guy is ok! Link to comment
tinkerbellkj
Thanks ladies, I feel a lot better. I was terrified to go to a specialist, it just sounded so scary to me, but they were incredibly nice and wonderful. The doctor was extremely personable, actually much better than my own OBGYN! I was glad that I went, except for when my husband, the doctor, and the sonographer ganged up on me and told me to stay away from google, haha, but I know they are right! Link to comment
