How do you break up with someone who is so dependent on you, their only other option is homelessness

When we met, he had a job and was getting along fine with the people he was staying with as far as I knew. I did get nervous when he quit his job and after a month I told him he needed to look harder and even offered to let him use my car to find one but he refused to use it. We started getting into a lot of arguments about money but he said he just needed a little time to find a job. I figured everyone was having a hard time finding a job (I was) so I gave him some time. But now it's been 10 months, more issues other then his unemployment are effecting our relationship and I'm at the point that I want to end it. However, I do care about the guy and I don't want to put him on the street. So I've been feeling stuck.

He won't be on the street.. He's no doubt a hustler so he will be able to find someone to stay with even if he has to couch surf a bit.
