  1. My current clients don't have autism. Some have borderline intellectual disability and a couple have mild-moderate intellectual disability (the term "retarded" is very politically incorrect in Australia). With my oldest client who is aged 50, his mother left when he was very, very young and then when he was preschool, he had a physically, verbally and emotionally abusive stepmother for a few years. English was not her first language, and we have been told she hated him. From what we can make out, a diagnosis was not made early and he lived in a relatively isolated rural region. Despite all of this, he is by far, the sweetest, dearest, most living kind person I have ever known. I believe that if he had different parenting and early interventions, his life would be much more advantaged than it is. He does have some literacy skills but very basic - early primary school age equivalent, very little numeracy skills, but what upsets him most is that doctors will not grant him a learners permit to either drive a car or ride a motor bike. It's what he would like most in the world. For the first time in his life, he is now cooking his own meals, washing his clothes, doing housework and grocery shopping. He does require a fair amount of support in the way of prompting as he does not have good planning skills and can only take in simple messages. Hopefully for him, we can help him develop skills through repetition and habit.
  2. I'm glad you don't feel hurt by your ex anymore alum, and that you got to gave a nice time with your friend.
  3. Good luck. I'm sure you don't need it though.
  4. I bet you will be so happy to just have you and the boys soon!
  5. ((((((Lum)))))))). My mother's faculties go up and down and my sisters have had many embarrassments and frustrations. Oh my mother never drove, but if she ever had, she definitely shouldn't now.
  6. Sorry to hear this. Growing old sucks. Are your parents living in a small town? I was just thinking about how the town I live in has a relatively high proportion of senior people, and not sure if it is folklore, but an unusually high proportion of women who live to a very ripe age. One of the things which really touched me here was seeing how many elderly people here work in volunteer services for the town - I would say most of them, and of course, there is N, the sweet gent who runs his shop and claims to be 92 - although he does live with his daughter and has had carers at times. N still drives, but I think mostly around the town, and there's not much traffic.
  7. I hate the fire season. So glad I live in town now.
  8. So sorry to read this LUM. ((((()))))))
  9. Glad times are slower for you right now and that you are getting some time for yourself. Enjoy it while it lasts!
  10. With Liane Holiday Willey, im certain that she said that she was so lonely and desperate for friendship as she had moved away from her family for schooling that she let these MEAN GIRLS use her as a taxi driver. She was so hurt, but because of her loneliness, she let them get away with it.
  11. Liane Holiday Willey wrote quite a lot about that in her autobiography. I don't think she was diagnosed until one of her kus was. Brilliant woman!
  12. I might check her out Vic. Do you know any good links on all the senses. Cheets posts also reminded how much I was interested in learning about sensory integration with children and fun activities. Today at work, had some good things happen with clients who rarely engage in activities, but today seemed to get it right. They don't have autism as far as I know, but Aim certain that at least one of them would have sensory integration issues. The other one has unstable schizophrenia, severe anxiety and depression. I brought in a book of Adult Coloring In Designs, some high quality watercolor pencils and other coloring resources. I have not seen him engage himself in activity like this before or appear so calm and relaxed. Sorry if thst was high jacking. Re the other client, got him a football and he was practising with eye-hand and eye-foot for hours. He also has OCD so lovely to see him away from his obsessive cleaning rituals. My co-worker was excited and happy to see this as well as we have felt at a loss at what we can do to help our depressed client.
  13. Really interesting video on sensory processing disorder Vic. Would have do lived to hear her speak more on the EIGHTEEN senses.
  14. So glad I don't have to do things like assignments at home. You teachers work hard for your money!
  15. Hope you at least got a decent rest Lum! (((((((()))))))))
  16. Hi Fudgie. What is ABA therapy and can it be helpful for issues other than autism. We have a lovely client atm who is severely depressed, has been on all types of Meds and nothing seems to be helping him. He has schizophrenia and is severely depressed, as well has extreme anxiety.
  17. I hope it's all finished for you soon Lum and you get a break!
  18. I used to love spinning myself too, and then as an adult, definitely get some type of great feel-good by spinning on skates.
  19. Looks like an interesting and fun day Lum. I haven't been to anything quite like that - just very pale shades of it, but I'm sure I would enjoy your fair a lot. I want one of those pig masks. LOL
  20. Take care and we will catch up when you can. Hugs
  21. Hi Faraday! I live in a southern part of Australia in a small country town near the border. We are having a very cold few weeks by Australian standards with temperatures getting to minus 5 degrees Celsius. There is snow predicted in areas we don't usually get it although I am not too far from the Alpine region where there do have ski fields. Just have the wood heater where I'm living atm but I have lots if woolies including my rugs. Of course, it's nothing like Canada. Most of us couldn't cope with your winter weather for mire than a holiday.
  22. Grateful for my collection of hand-knitted and crotcheted rugs and that I have a wood heater at home!
