Let's say you have been dating a guy and during Valentine's Day he proposes to you with an engagement ring but you think he is still not the one yet or that you are not ready for it yet. What would you do? What would you say?

I would be honest with him, tell him you aren't sure about taking it to that level quite yet and need some time to think but to keep the thought.

If he's not 'the one,' why would you say anything other than no...?

Just bear in mind that a refusal may mean the end of the relationship - so be sure that you really don't want to marry.

If you're not ready, you need to say so, bearing in mind, as DN said that it might spell the end of the relationship.

 

If you're saying no because you don't think he's the one, then I would question why you're dating someone who you don't think is the one. (But this is just me, personally, if I don't think it's going to be long term, I don't bother. If it's too early to make that judgement (and I think you have a rough idea fairly early on anyway), I think it's too early to propose).
