What in the world does this mean

That was a test. You failed this test if you went with her. You should have said "No, not today, you were right - we DO spend too much time together."

 

It would have (1) shown her you were listening and (2) shown her you were confident enough to turn her down and (3) shown her that you can make decisions.

 

She would not have been happy, but I'd put money on her respecting it.

I did turn her down, and yes, it was part of a conversation about how we know how to get under eachother's skin. I responded to her with a hmph and a thoughtful nod (to her statement). It was said in a joking tone. We actually had a really good talk the other night (after this event) about boundaries and being open and honest about thoughts and feelings.

Nah, you don't need to respond to this sort of stuff with "talks" etc./

 

If she gives you things like "we spend too much time together" or anything like that, just give her wants and back off 5 times more than she wants and see what happens.

 

Use a bit of challenge and she'll be begging to spend more time with her.
