midnightdeirdre
"If you do not give to yourself, you will always hold others at emotional gunpoint." *~David White~* Self-help guru Cheryl Richardson quoted this at one of her seminars, when talking about the importance and value of self-care. What does it mean, exactly? Thank you. Link to comment
Seraphim
It means if you can't self soothe your own emotional problems you will always expect someone else to do it for you. That makes you and other people a prisoner of your own problems. Link to comment

journeynow
If you do not do things for yourself and take responsibility for your own happiness, you'll expect others to and hold it against them if they don't. ("If he really loved me he'd do __________________.) It doesn't mean you need to be selfish, however. Link to comment

Kendahke
No one else can make you happy except you. You have to find happiness within yourself. You will make others miserable if you can't find happiness within yourself first. Link to comment
sonicfan287
You need to be happy with yourself, who you are. Accept the things you can't change and work on the things you can. Don't expect praise and credit from others ; instead be self edifying and take their praise (if any) as an added bonus but don't expect others to fulfill your dreams for you or to tell you what you should do, or give you the reassurance that only you can provide.
