Aurian
My BF has ongoing stomach and colon trouble. He has already been to a doctor and gotten a battery of tests (blood test, x-rays, etc) but they found nothing. He is a bit relucent to go back yet again after having no success on previous visits, so I am hoping if I can get some ideas as to what it might be I might convince him to go or find a specialist. His diet is good - not too much coffee/caffiene, alchohol or artificial foods. Not much fast food either. He said he hasn`t seen much effect on his stomach from diet (there seems to be no common thread when his stomach gets upset). His lower stomach/colon apparently hurts a lot and will make weird noises after eating (and LOUD too). He also has to go to the washroom a lot and says he even pulls stomach muscles doing so! He also gets diarreah. Does this ring a bell with anyone? I`d love it if I can find something to convince him to try again with a doctor. Link to comment
Cimmie
He may have irritable bowel syndrome. Very common condition. Does he eat enough soluble fibre in his diet? Oatmeal and fruit are the best sources. Bran fibre can be too tough on delicate insides. Oatmeal encourages production of mucilage which speeds waste transit. He also needs to drink lots and lots of water. No nasty soda drinks or anything like that. Link to comment
Lana0120
It sounds to me like as if it's a problem related to a specific type of food. He could have gluten intolerance, for example. Link to comment
Aurian
Thanks - two good suggestions! Cimmie, I don`t think he eats a lot of fibre outside of a whole-wheat scone for breakfast. Maybe I`ll cook up some high-fibre meals/desserts and see if that helps him a bit. Lana, that`s another good idea, he could see if cutting out gluten helps or something. Keep the ideas coming, and I will pass them onto him! Link to comment
Lana0120
There is one other thing, but I expect doctors have said this already as they can't find a medical cause: stress! Link to comment
cblack21
I've got crohn's disease and it took doctors 9 months to diagnose it. Problems got more and more severe over that time period and eventually a colonoscopy proved it. They thought I had IBS at one point and tried to prescribe me anti-depresants, they thought It was Ciliac Sprue at one point and tried to get me to go Gluten free (miserable by the way) They thought I might be Lactos intolerant at one point... It took them a long time and I nearly died before it was over. I spent about four years trying to control symptoms once diagnosed. Eventually it almost killed me again and I had major surgery (resection of small and large intestine) basically removing six inches from each and then reconnecting it. That was three years ago and I've had zero problems since. The longer it takes to get diagnosed the more dangerous these problems can be. Had they diagnosed mine earlier it wouldn't have gotten nearly as bad as it did. Link to comment
cblack21
If it's Ciliac, cutting down on glutten isn't going to do it, it needs to be completely removed which is a HUGE undertaking to start. They can test for this disease with a series of blood tests. If it's active crohn's or colitis, added fiber may actually irritate it and make it worse. IBS is more of an aggrivation and not incredibly painful, I don't think you would be posting this topic if this were a minor issue and not causing him alot of pain but maybe I'm wrong. I don't think it's irratable bowl syndrome. You want to take him to a gastrointerologist they handle these sorts of issues and can usually handle all the testing in 1 or 2 visits. Link to comment
Siriana
My first idea was Crohn, but I am sure that hurts a lot...so i hope it's not. He needs to see a specialist, if he says he doesn't want to make an appointment for him. Thats the only thing that works when it comes to my bf. Link to comment
Aurian
Okay, I'll give him the info everyone suggested - hopefully that motivates him to try a specialist and take it a bit more seriously. He does seem to be in pain, but after going to a regular doctor several times, he seems to have gone into "there's nothing I can do" mode. Hopefully this convinces him to keep trying! Thanks. StarLily
Sounds like IBS...or something worse and I hope it isn't. He should have a colonoscopy done. Link to comment
