ran into my ex girlfriend

So, my ex and i broke up last march, but she already has a boyfriend for about 2 months now. We haven't been talking in about a month and a half. However, today we ran into each other in a common friend's engagement party. I said hi and greeted her, we talked and joked for about 2-3 mins, then i told her it was good to see her and then gave her a friendly hug and left. Was this the right thing to do?

Yup. That's the way to handle it. You had a close relationship, so a handshake would have been rather rude, not acknowledging that relationship. A friendly hug is appropriate.
