Great Friend with a crush

I am really close friends with a girl that used to go to my school. She had to go to a private school so we sometime hang out outside of school and talk through email and AIM. Anyway, I began to get feelings for her, and now I really want to ask her out. Problem is, I don't want to harm our friendship. If she says no, or doesn't fell the same way about me then that could ruin our friendship and I don't want that to happen. I think she may have feelings toward me, but I have no experience with telling if a girl likes me, so I may be thinking these signs are flirting, but maybe they aren't. So can you guys give me any advice about how to go about asking her out, or is this one of those things I need to figure out on my own?

You will not ruin the friendship by asking her out. If she says no, simply say that its cool and continue to be friends. Id say go for it.
