greywolf
Ok, I feel really silly asking this, but I've never worn a scarf in my life, and I'm trying to crochet one. I'm worried that it's too thick/stiff. Are they supposed to be soft? Link to comment
jenny_mcs
Ok, I feel really silly asking this, but I've never worn a scarf in my life, and I'm trying to crochet one. I'm worried that it's too thick/stiff. Are they supposed to be soft? Yeah, they should be soft enough that you would want it around your neck, touching your bare skin, and flexible enough to easily tie. What kind of yarn are you using? That might be the problem. (I knit, and have made a lot of scarves, but don't crochet.) Link to comment
greywolf
I'm using a medium sized yarn. Do you think it would be better if I switched to a bigger hook? Link to comment
Fudgie
I think the medium sized one will work fine. Heck, I even have some other scarves that are made with thicker (larger) yarns but the yarn is soft and lightweight, so I don't really notice the weight at all. I haven't ever had a "not soft" scarf but I'm sure some exist. I'm sure you'll love it, greywolf! Link to comment
jenny_mcs
I think it's comparable to knitting, so yes, if you switch to a bigger hook, the stitches will be looser, and more flexible. However- how much of the scarf do you have? The first couple of inches of any project usually look pretty tight, and seem horrible, lol. You can't really get an idea of how the project till you knit/crochet a bit. If you only have a few inches, and are following the pattern, hang in there, it's probably fine. 1 Link to comment
greywolf
Only 1.5 inches lengthwise. >_> I'll do a couple more inches lol. I just started doing that much and then panicked because it seemed too stiff! Link to comment
Fudgie
I've knitted too and jenny's right...the first inches are always stuff/tight. It gets better as you go on. your scarf won't end up all tight like that. 1 Link to comment
jenny_mcs
Yes, do a bit more! You really can't tell at this point, because it's still so close to the needles/hook. The beginning always sucks, lol. Hang in there. If you liked the yarn and the pattern, you'll be fine. Link to comment
simply
scarves are the reason I leave my house during the winter.. Link to comment
greywolf
Honestly, no one in my family wears scarves, but since they're really easy to make (i'm just a beginner at crocheting), I figured I'd try to make it the new 'in' thing among my relatives. >_> Link to comment
Cognitive_Canine
Softness is really important on scarves. The skin on the neck is extremely sensitive. I have a coat that I love to wear but the wool collar irritates me like crazy...I actually sewed in a lining to prevent it from tearing up my skin. Link to comment
trezz
when i used to knit with my mother we could use the same wool (yarn) needles, pattern everything but mine would be stiff as a board hers nice and floppy. i used to pull the wool too tight when knitting. is crochet anything similar? is there a part on the pattern that says the scarf should be a certain width? if you are pulling too tight it will be narrow and stiff. on the pattern it should say what guage of wool to use, if you are using a pattern that is. greywolf
Yeah, I tend to pull too tight. I ended up just doing the whole thing over again and trying not to make it so too tight. It's turning out a lot better, I think. Link to comment
trezz
i hope you have better luck at crochet then i had at knitting. i gave up, i am a knitting wimp. tension to me was the hardest part of knitting maybe i will try again some day. enjoy your scarf. Link to comment
