Newly paralyzed?

My father is newly paralyzed due to a gunshot wound to the spinal cord. I don't know how to support him. He's lucky he's alive but his life has changed forever. 

Everytime I think about it I feel physically sick and I keep putting myself in his shoes and its this horrific feeling. I feel so bad for him. 
 

Does anyone have any advice? How can I support him?
