Looking for suggestions for Virginia Beach vacation

I am planning to visit the Virigina Beach (Hampton Roads) area this summer. This would also include Chesapeake and the Eastern Shore. Does anyone have some suggestions about accommodations and fun things to do? Maybe some off-the-beaten-track attractions that are interesting? There are just two adults travelling so we aren't looking at kid-based attractions unless they are also appealing to adults who are kids at heart.

I can't help you with VA beach (only went there for a hockey game), but I went to school around the eastern shore and vacation in the Chesapeake yearly.
