Does anyone here use food stamps? How does a person qualify for food stamps?

It's through the Department of Human Services.

 

Go to the government pages of your local phone book, and under state numbers, look for the Department of Human Services. You'll find a listing of district offices. Find out which one covers the area you're in (this may take calling a few numbers), and once you have the right office, go down in person to apply.

 

They will look at your income, your assets, and total financial picture to see if you qualify. If you are below a certain income level, you qualify, so long as you don't have lots of savings, expensive items owned, etc. The amount that qualifies you varies from state to state, but for the most part, you have to be around or below the poverty line.
