Breaking up with friend or relative

I have a post on the relationships forum about a situation that made me think about this but I would like a general opinion completely unrelated to my specific situation.

 

Have you ever broken up with someone that was very close to you (that was NOT a boyfriend, lover or husband), like a parent, close friend, relative etc and have never again made up with that person and why.

And if that person is now dead did their death hurt all the more because of the rift? How did the whole thing affect you? Do or did you think about it a lot? Was it something that made you sad for the rest of your life or did you at some point manage to simple brush it off?
