The waiting game

So I have recently noticed that there is a guy on my Facebook who I used to go to school with continually liking my photos/posts. He was in the year above and was briefly in my literature class until he dropped it. We spoke occasionally but haven't in quite some time. We've basically been playing this weird game of liking each other's stuff back and forth for quite some time now and I don't really notice him behave like this with any other people. I think he's attractive and I like his posts too but I've heard about situations like this before when one eventually caves and messages. I was just wondering what the opinions are here. This might sound to be ridiculously petty but I might like to try talking to him. He goes to a different university but I wonder if reaching out to him would be a good idea, considering we do live near each other back home? Please comment thoughts/opinions or if I generally sound really petty and that this doomed to go on forever?

Sure, why not? He's a former classmate. Just shoot him a "hey long time...how have you been?" type message to break the ice. Take it from there.
