psu11
hey everyone, i was wondering if you have two foods, both of which are 250 calories, but one has 45g of fat and the other has 3g of fat, does that affect weight gain even if they have the same amount of calories? Link to comment
majord23
hey everyone, i was wondering if you have two foods, both of which are 250 calories, but one has 45g of fat and the other has 3g of fat, does that affect weight gain even if they have the same amount of calories? Nope, calories is what counts when it comes to weight gain. Fat is calorie intensive (contains approximately 9 calories per gram), which is why we are advised to keep our intake of it down. But it is also advisable to look at the nutritional values of 'low fat' food, as they quite often have a higher carbohydrate content (in the form, of sugar/corn syrup) to add to taste....and the calories may be approaching that of the 'regular fat' version of the same food. Technically you wouldn't ever be faced with the specific dilemma that you've posted. ie the absolute minimum amount of calories in a food with 45 grams of fat is 405. Link to comment
Dako
Some fats are good, some bad, yet in regard to weightloss, essentially a calorie is a calorie. The current wave of fat-free foods is often loaded with carbohydrates and sugars, yet gets labelled "fat-free." Link to comment
babypink61
Was that just an example or is there really a food that would have only 250 calories but 45 g of fat?? Something with high amount of fat should also have a much higher calorie content. Link to comment
Batya33
There are nine calories per fat gram. If you eat a food that is high in fat, you will take in less nutrition than if it is high in protein with less fat and thereforeeee you will be hungrier sooner and eat more overall. Same thing if a food is high in refined carbs. thereforeeee, having 250 calories worth of tuna packed in water (a very large can) will keep you fuller longer than 4 ounces of premium ice cream (which is about 250-300 calories) which is more than half fat.
