Music Lovers opinions wanted

Recommended Posts

I'm preparing to record a CD. Exciting time, and I need input as to the songs. The concept is something like "Timeless songs of life and love" or something like that. I want to do pop classics, Broadway classics, even older stuff but in contemporary arrangements so they sound new. Here's the short list of songs, depending on my getting the rights to record them, and I'd like suggestions and feedback. Thanks a lot to all.

Climb Ev'ry Mountain (Sound of Music)

Sometimes When We Touch (Barry Mann)

Come What May (from Moulin Rouge)

Beautiful Dreamer (an old classic)

Circle of Life (Lion King)

Happiness (Charlie Brown)

Winner Takes it All (Abba)

Just the Way You Are (Billy Joel)

Summertime (Gershwin)

Maybe This Time (from Cabaret)

Blue Moon (Rodgers & Hart)

Other ideas were:

Music of the Night

Love Changes Everything (Andrew Lloyd Webber)

Where Is Love (Oliver)

What I Did For Love (Chorus Line)

Thanks again.

I'm heavy into jazz, so I can name a few. Not sure how many have been arranged in a contemporary style, but they could work. Ones asterisked might be good as is.

"Lush Life" by Billy Strayhorn

"In A Sentimental Mood" by Duke Ellington

"Sophisticated Lady" by Duke Ellington

"Body & Soul" by Edward Heyman, Frank Eyton, Johnny Green, Robert Sour

*"Embraceable You" by Gershwin, sung by Jane Monheit

*"My Romance" by Lorenz Hart, Richard Rodgers, perf by Ellis Marsalis

I know tons of romantic jazz songs, but I don't know how many are contemporized. That's just a few that came to mind. Some, however, sound better older. Some of the most romantic songs in jazz are also go way back in time.

Well...

Have you ever seen the movie 'Labyrinth'? It's my favourite film of all time...

David Bowie acted in it, and did half of the soundtrack (all the tracks with words!!)

The most beautiful love song on the planet is called 'As The World Falls Down'.

Get in touch with me if you'd like to hear it.

P.S. Don't forget The Rolling Stones, and The Beatles.

'Wild horses' and 'Angie' by TRS.

'Let It Be' and 'Yesterday' by TB.

Make sure you check out Eva Cassidy (some clips at link removed) - the most beautiful voice you will ever hear!

These 3 are my favourites:

- Fields of Gold

- Somewhere over the Rainbow

- Songbird

[bTW, I hate people when they say Eva Cassidy is like Norah Jones - in fact Norah Jones is a pastiche of her (the record exec. that rejected Eva signed up Norah after seeing Eva's popularity in the UK several years ago)!!! .]

Also, check out Katie Melua, she was inspired by Eva Cassidy, she is only 18 but she has a very beautiful voice, and she is a very beautiful person.

Classic Love Songs:

Because I Love You -Shakin' Stevens

More Than I Can Say -Leo Sayer

A Kiss To Build A Dream On - Louie Armstrong

Contemporary:

You've Got a Way-Shania Twain (original version)

More Than Words -Extreme

Bizarre Love Triangle -Frente

So Much In Love -All 4 One

Sukiyaki -4 P.M.

...Michael Buble is pretty good as well, especially if you're looking for a contemporary version of classic love songs. Some of his songs are kind of bland, but one that most stands out is "Home".
