You mistake instict and genetic disposition as the only factors involved. I'm simply stating that they are a fact.

 

 

Again, an evolutionary perspective has it place with other THEORIES...but it's important to realize that it is just a THEORY....not an absolute flawless dogma from which we can stereotype all of humanity. If we're all just trying to survive and to spead our genes, does that mean murder, rape, and racism is ok?

 

It's not a "theory", it's been studied and proven. This doesn't justify behavior, it simply explains it. Once you are able to explain the tendencies for specific behavior, and accept that these urges are natural (rather than denying that they exist), it is much easier to control them. Why live in denial?

 

Of course biology plays a role in behavior, but to reduce the human experience only to biologial factors is absurd. We're born into an environment and both nature and nurture work together to shape us. To ignore the aspects of life that make us different from monkeys, such as love, morality, and sprituality, and call them a "facade" is inaccurate.

 

To deny their existence is the facade. And why are you picking on monkeys? They have feelings too you know.

 

A facade is defined as an artifical and deceiptful front, if morality is such a front, why have centuries and centuries of humans written about morality? Why have people died for their faith as martyrs (killing themselves and their sperm?) If it's only a fake cover-up, why are we so passionate about it?

 

You misunderstand. I said that claiming that these urges were nonexistant and that one's "morality" was all that existed is deceitful. One's morality is responsible for self-restraint, but these biological urges still exist.

 

I don't want to steer this post away from the issue at hand, which is a women distressed about her husband's obsession with "teen" porn. All I can say is that if I were in her shoes, I would not accept the excuse that it's ok for her husband to do this, even when it bothers her, because he is simply "being a man", and men want to look at 18-22 year olds because they're good targets to shoot sperm at.

 

The point is that it's a natural urge, it's not "sick"... it's natural. If it conflicts with her moral views, that is a completely separate issue.

 

The fact that it is legal for him to look at "teen porn" means that the majority of the population feel that it isn't all that "sick" and "immoral" anyways.... so what's the big deal?

It's wrong to justify the wrong things you are doing by saying, "Almost everyone is doing it."

 

If this is infact "scientifically" proven... Do you know how many "proven" scientific ideas are out there that contradict eachother? Many people have the tendency to twist things around to fit their cause. I think in your post you forgot to add the "buts" and "howevers." You shouldn't believe everything you read.

 

I don't think that anyone would be able to convince me that it's okay to look at teen porn. This is the one beleif I am most stubborn about, and just because I'm not sexually into the younger people who look to be underage does not make me prude. I am open in many other ways.

 

If someone is able to look at a 20 year old that looks 15 and get turned on, they can likely get turned on by a 15 year old they see passing down the street (because, hey, it's not your fault you didn't know her age, right?) And if you're indeed looking at an underage 15 year old who "accidentally" wasn't IDed and get turned on, who's to say you wouldn't have a gross imagination for a 15 year old you pass by?

Sorry to bust into your statistical info, but personally I, and my other gf's that I asked about this, remain attracted to our boyfriends and husbands all through our mentrual cycles. I am not controlling myself from jumping on a naughty rock star or biker dude in leather every 15th of the month if you know what I mean!! I am both sexually attracted to and emotionally invested in the *same guy*, every day of the month! And my lady friends, the same! I guess we were not polled for this "statisical" information study.

It definitely is a theory. Let's define a theory: "A set of statements or principles devised to explain a group of facts or phenomena, especially one that has been repeatedly tested or is widely accepted and can be used to make predictions about natural phenomena."

 

Evolutionary Psychology is ONE way to explain human behavior. Yes it has been tested and there is evidence that some of it's principles are scientifically sound. But keep in mind that no research is 100% free from experimenter and subject bias. The research you refer to about women during ovulation which was conducted in Scotland and Japan, is the result of researchers showing women pictures and surveying them at different times of their cycle. Anytime you rely on SURVEY data there is a risk of invalidities in the study.

 

Perhaps I'm the wrong person to debate this with because there will never be an end..... I completed my master's in Psychology, I look at all research with a careful eye, don't use the word "proof" in my vocabulary, and also oppose evolutionary perspectives of human behavior because I think the environment is far more important.

 

Now I must go. Every moment I type here is precious time that my eggs are not getting fertilized. I'm going to put on some pheromone cologne so I can go find a hot, buff biker-dude to sleep with so I can fulfill my genetic destiny. (Hey I could get used to this THEORY....)
