Poping a cherry refers to breaking the hymen which can be broken by a tampon,sports, sexual intercourse, and a number of other things. infact some females are born without one or it's already been broken somehow.

 

One other little note the hymen is located at the entrence to the virgina not inside it exactly.

Women/girls/females have a membrane called the hymen in their vaginas. It can be broken by lots of things. If it has not been broken before she loses her virginity, then it will probably be broken when she has sex the first time. It is very unlikely to not be broken, if she has had sex. But it being broken, does not mean she has had sex.

for instance girls who are very athletic, especially gymnasts, very often tear the hymen. Also girls who go horseback riding, cycling etc.

While the original usage of the term is to the breaking of the hymen, it is now just as commonly used to refer to anyone, males as well as females, losing their virginity.
