It depends...some cancers (like leukemia) are ones that are diagnosed through blood tests in their earlier stages. Others (such as tumours) are done by biopsies (removal of suspect tissue or part of it, such as from breast), and some are caught (cervical cancer) first through pap smears then through further biopsies. Some are first "caught" with CT or MRI scans, and then further exploration is done to diagnose if it is benign or malignant. Some are caught through elevated hormone levels in urine or other body fluids (like prostrate cancer).

 

So, as you can tell, all depends on the cancer...if you are having problems with your health though or have found lumps, a doctor is best place to go to explore your options.
