How to handle negative circulating negative comments?

Since anger is one defense mechanism for justifying that breaking up is a good idea. Faults of the dumpee would be exagerrated so those told the stories would have to agree with the dumper that he made the right choice. Friends of the dumper too might share some twisted story about dumpee so dumper wont feel bad about his decision.

 

Scenario above hasn't happened yet (or maybe yes but I wouldnt know). What do you do though? I'm just concerned about friendship in the future if this would happen since he would be angry/indifferent.

Honestly? Stick to friends who won't trash someone on the basis of another's word, without giving that person right of response.

 

Barring that, get in first with your account so at least they see there's a discrepancy or keep an eye out for any change in their behaviour toward you and question them at the first sign so that you have an opportunity to set the record straight.

Not if they think you've done something deplorable and out of character; they should, at the least, come to you first, though.
