Facebook asking out?

I am in college and last year I ended up hanging out with this guy after a small get-together and we made out that night. Afterward he came and talked to me a few times but I got involved with someone else before anything else could happen. He was gone all last semester but now he is back and both times I have run into him he has come up and talked to me. I want to ask him to hang out some time but I only ever see him in really public/group situations where it isn't really appropriate. I don't want to keep waiting for the right moment. From a man's perspective, would it be okay to send him a casual message on facebook and see if he wants to hang out some time? Or does that come off as too forward or weird?
