should i tell her i'm leaving?

I've known this person for years but for the past year or so we've been distant. Whatever I do it always upsets or hurts her in some way or another. I'm planning to move and I don't think I will be coming back anytime soon. Should I out of respect and admiration tell her, or leave silently and save her the pain or whatever she'd feel. Hell, we've grown so distant I don't even know if she'd care if I left.. What do you think?

Write a letter or just call her. I think writing it down is more meaningful.
