Women are probably more in touch with what it feels like to not be in control of yourself because we go through profound physical and psychological changes regularly. This causes us to have more empathy for someone who's powerless over their cravings.

Men are more logical and straightforward. If an addict needs help he can get. If it was a family member. I would disown him for his actions. Lack of control is lack of power and intelligence. Getting hooked is pure stupidity because you always have the option of NOT taking said drugs. There is plenty of education out there inform people, stupidity is not an excuse.

Once a person has fallen into the trap of addiction their entire mental process becomes geared towards keeping them addicted. There are generally four reasons why addicts get clean: life, love, liver, and livelyhood. Admitting that to oneself that the addiction is currently in control and has made life intolerable is a very difficult thing for an addict to do, but it is necessary for recovery.
