Find people that you know play instruments or are willing to learn. Then try and get into a battle of the bands (that will put pressure on all of you to practice).

 

Meet three times a week in someone's garage and play covers from bands that you like.

Hey I'm an actress. Start out with reputable acting classes. Preferably at a college. If you can't afford that go see the small local theater doing anything.

I have been a musician for many years and have come close enough to success that I can at least tell you. It probably works the same way in acting. The key is who you know in the business that will help. That help can come in many forms, but basically having someone famous or established help you or say something good about you in the press is the only way in. That is largely a matter of chance, but it is also possible to put yourself in the place where it is more likely to happen. It doesn't hurt to be great either, but you can be great and not having the first part you are no better off than someone with nothing at all.
