I sent an e-card to my estranged mom for Christmas, and a recent picture of myself. We have been e-mailing a bit in the last few months, but she is very closed off. Anyways, she completely surprised me by asking (via her e-mail reply) if it would be okay if she came to see me when my sister comes to town. I couldn't believe it. I've been waiting for this (she hasn't been ready when I've asked) for years! I really hope that this is a new start for us, and not just yet another false start.

I never did update. I saw my mom in the winter. I went skating with her, my sister, and my neice (my brother's little girl) But, since then, she hasn't been up for anything, and barely even e-mails with me. So, it was unfortunately a false start.
