Working for company AFTER you've finished your notice period

Just wondering if anyone has found themselves in this situation and how common it is? A friend of mine has been working out his notice period with current employer but one of the bosses there has asked him to do work post- notice as a favour as they're understaffed. What's the legality of this? Doesn't handing in your notice mean they have to stop asking you to help them out after a certain date? I find it very odd! any thoughts?
