What's the best way to reconnect with an ex without being awkward?

I'm taking a trip to a city next month which one of my exes lives near, and am hoping to get back in touch with her while I'm in town. This relationship was a long time ago (7-8 years) and wasn't too serious, nor did it end badly (it just fizzled out). I still have her number from back then since I've had the same SIM card forever, but I don't know if it's still her number. I Googled her and while she doesn't have FB, she does have Instagram, which I only have a throwaway account for. I've never been in this position before, what's the best way to reach out without seeming awkward or stalkerish?

By telephone. And if her number HAS changed...you don't reach out because THAT would be stalkerish.

I would say just ask if she would like to catch up for a friendly coffee while you're visiting and see where it goes from there

So since I'm completely ignorant of Instagram etiquette, would randomly following her be normal or come accross as stalkerish?

Instagram etiquette....HAH. I think following someone who you were once romantically involved with but have not spoken to in 7-8 years would be creepy.

Well since you don't have a real Instagram account, following her on a junk account would be weird.
