Ok, so here is the thing: I have had an on-again/off-again long distance relationship with some one for the past 4 years. We were young (24) when we met and we both still had alot to learn about ourselves. After our usual break-ups months would go by where we would have no contact. There really was no need since the there was no chance of us running into each other and it just made it easier on both of us not to talk. We would never break up because someone did something bad or anything or the lack of love. It was just because of timing. Well, 7 months went by since the last break-up. We were going to be in the same city for New Years so we sent a couple of emails back and forth just to let each other know but it wasn't anything big. He called me a few times while we were in the same city but we never did see each other. Since then he calls me anywhere from every couple of days to 2 weeks apart. I never call him. He has told me that he just started dating someone but that it is not serious and he knows there is no future with her. He says he wants us to be friends and I told him that will never work out. At one point we thought we were going to spend our lives together and I know that anyone I am with in the future or anyone that he is with would not appreciate us still being friends after we have had such strong emotions for each other.
So here is the thing, he called me on Valentines Day at 8:30 PM. I was at a friend's house who happens to be a guy. My ex seemed ok with that and even told me he was going to dinner with the girl he is dating but once again he mentioned it isn't serious with her. When we were hanging up he said sarcastically to have fun with the guy I was hanging out with and I told him to not be like that so he said he was kidding.
We both have told each other that we are not completely over each other and we just want each other to be happy. He has not given me any indication that he wants to get back together, though, except for the phone calls telling me how much he just needed to hear my voice. I am just confused as to why he had to call me on Valentines Day. I did not call him or any of my other ex's on that day.
Basically, I just want to get some people's opinions and advice on this. Thanks!
