how to tell the friend about his one

My buddies Ex girlfriend wants to hook up with me and I am very interested because she is a great girl, But Im not sure how to tell my buddy or how he will react. Our friendship is not all that important to me but I still do not want to hurt him. Keep in mind they have been split for a year and a half.
