Lost my job...

Recommended Posts

Yes, thats right, I was fired yesterday.

Happily it was not because I did a bad job (they didn't had a single complaint about my work), but because my boss and I couldn't stand each other. Guess he decided to get rid of me, even if I did a hell of a job.

Tell me your success stories, stories about karma doing what karma does, etc. I need to cheer up!

I am sorry to hear that. I lost my job a couple months ago under simalar circumstances. Since then I have been busting my *** in a factory and submitting my resume to anyone who I think might care. I had an interview yesterday... but I haven't heard back from them yet.

Remember that who you are isn't defined by what you do.

what do you mean that you two "couldn't stand each other?" do you think this may impact his recommendation of you? does he also agree that you did a good job?

Long story short. I was in team A, after a while I became the team lead, but my manager didn't wanted me to be the team lead, so I was transfered to team B (basically all people in team A elected me as the team lead, ignored the previos team lead, and took my workload so I could help them as the team lead, which pissed of the manager).

I was doing perfectly fine on team B, and in the meantime team A fell to pieces.

9 months later, the old manager from team A was fired, and a new manager was assigned to the team. The project manager and the new team manager wanted me to return to team A as the team lead, I refused. They wanted me so badly in there, that they offered me twice the money, and I didn't accept nor refused the offer (dumb me!!!), so I went back to team A as the team lead.

I didn't want to go back to team A as the new manager and the old manager had something, but broke up, and I knew from a long time ago, that this guy didn't liked me. At first he made it seem as if everything was fine, but as time went by, we started having disagreements. I can tell you this, none of them were as bad as to have me fired, I guess he was just waiting for an excuse. And now that I think about it, I think that he didn't wanted me back in that team, it was an idea from the project manager.

Yes, he agrees that I did a good job. His reason to fire me was "my attitude".

Well, I guess I had already been for too long in the same job, there was nothing left to do there for me. It's time to move on to bigger and better things.

oh, that sucks. I hope he gives you a good letter of rec. Maybe this is a good thing, like you said. I know one person on here (I don't want to give away their identity), but that person was fired from their job, also for reasons that didn't seem to be related to their abilities or their performance. That person was upset, but soon after, a far better opportunity presented itself and that person is now very very happy in their new job! so, that worked out well.

maybe there is something better out there for you also....

OK, for four years I had a very hi stress job that required alot of after hours and overtime but I was salaried so I didn't get paid for anything over 40. I got laid off on October 18th 2006. I happened to be starting my vacation that day which is probably why they chose to do it then. I was in an LDR and going to see my girlfriend for a few days. When I got laid off, I figured I could use some time to relax before I started the job hunt so I extended my visit by a week. I had an awesome time hanging out with my girlfriend and that extra week was a nice bonus. When I got home, I put resumes out on a monday afternoon and by tuesday afternoon I already had an offer on the table for 20k more than my previous job and I'm not allowed to work even an hour over 40 in a week. My girlfriend is back home, the new job not only pays alot more but is infinitely less stressful then my last job.

I didn't stress the lay off and I stayed positive and relaxed, it paid off huge.

Sorry to hear that ST. Here is my story, might cheer you up.

Several years ago I worked for an insanely bullying boss in a part of government. Three years of it, it had enormous negative effects on my health and my perspective. I stayed because I was doing my thesis on the topic of my work and we were breaking new ground, so I decided to suck it up for the sake of my blossoming career.

The woman was evil evil evil and the organisation knew but did nothing about it. I did not want to raise her behaviour with the bosses because I knew they would not do anything - they were scared to do so because she was a bit psycho. However, I entertained the fantasy that the director of the division (who I knew respected and liked me) would step in if it got bad enough. Then he left, and a new director came in.

My evil boss got as cosy as she could with the new director, and started trying to discredit me (and anyone else she was threatened by). Evil boss obviously started to feel untouchable and her attitude to me became much worse. By the time I started making formal bullying statements my name was mud. The new director refused to do anything about evil boss and she told me the problem was mine, not the organisation's. When I then quit I was told that it was just as well I was leaving. I was crushed - I had worked very hard and had an excellent reputation as far as anyone who really knew what I did was concerned.

But after I left, evil boss and the director fell out. The director started getting the attutude too. There have also been four or so women just like me go through my role in the past 3 years, and each has been bullied by that same boss. One was a previous friend of evil boss, who unfortunately became her subordinate in a reshuffle. That person had a meltdown one day and never came back.

The story gets better. Just when you think there is no justice in the world, things change.

The industry we are in is undergoing change. The government department that we worked in is being absorbed into a different part of government. This evil ex-boss of mine, who was untouchable in her job, is now vulnerable. And this happens just as her latest bullying target is pushing back, and causing problems. The latest bullying target is going all out to make this a legal liability issue for the current employer, and she has everything on her side.

The new department that's absorbing them all is well aware of the reputation of the bully and doesn't want her. I have also had something to say to the people in the new department, just in case they weren't aware. And they are most receptive . So the evil boss is soon to be out of a job. And this woman has made everyone's life in the industry really hard - she was in a role of some power. I don't think she will ever be employed in this industry again.

It took a while, but yay karma.

I'm kind of stuck at this point. I don't know what to do. Should I look for a job right away, or should I spend some time on my own studying for the certifications I'm missing? I've got money saved that should get me by for 6 months, if I keep my expenses low, but I'm already bored to death.

Also I would like to move to a different country... As any job in this crappy 3rd world country is ridiculously underpaid. Heck, an illegal alien in the US earns more money than what I was getting paid as a network analyst.

For example, my cousin in the US is a stay at home mom, her husband works in the construction industry. They got a house and he got him a brand new fully loaded Honda Oddisey last year. Both of them are illegal aliens. Here I am a network analyst, with certifications, living with my parents as I can't afford to live on my own, and a 9 year old base model economy car...

By the way, she (my cousin) got a university degree (finances), but she was getting paid so little that she decided to move to the US...

Sorry to hear that.

I don't know if it helps, but I am also searching for a job - my previous job contract ended recently.

Oh, and also you can see how I come from former socialistic country (ex Yugoslavia) that had war from 1990-1995 and for the past 17 years has only jerks in government and curruption, also there is a big unemployment rate. Economy is going nowhere, as well as my prospects for the future.

I also have university degree.....

So at least I know what you're talking about...

If you want to move out of the country, there are actually a lot of opportunities. I spent a little over four years as a Network Engineer for the DOD (my last job) and while there I got an offer for 80K a year tax free (roughly the same as making 120k in the states) in Kyrgyzstan the company with the contract is called multimax and I believe they still have one or two spots over that way. I posted above earlier but since we're in pretty much the same field, I'll give you more depth. I got laid off from a senior network engineer spot (NE II) and the spot offered to me when I started looking was an Enterprise Network Engineer spot (NE IV) I got a significant jump in pay and I'm now the highest ranking person in my command chain at my site (and in my state) not having a boss around to constantly answer to is incredibly liberating. I went from DOD to DOI which is also infinitely less stressful. Good luck, there are alot of jobs available right now.

I have fairly recently had the same thing happen to me! The manager did not like me (I had been there for a while like you) and he accused me of stealing when I did not! I am still a bit bitter but it was for the best. I have just recently heard that he has been fired so I guess they finally caught on to his lack of ability to do his job.

Well, basically he could not get me on anything, nothing at all. So he accused me of calling names to one guy in the team. In fact, I did it, but it was all in fun, as the guy is all jokes, and that is the way we used to talk to each other in there. So while I did it, it wasn't in an offensive way, and to make it worse, my boss was the first one to call him names...

So basically he came up with a lame excuse to get me fired...

Hang in there, better and bigger things will come.

well - Annie - its actually illegal in the US to give a "bad" or "unfair" reference.

He could legally say things like, no comment or YES HE WORKED HERE but he wouldn't be allowed - legally anyway - to say anything negative in any way shape or form....

But you're not in the US, are you? - SuserTod?

But anyway SuserTod - sorry to hear it! Sounds like you could move on rather well tho - AND...you may find some time down the line that he did you a big favour!

Maybe......

I didn't know it was illegal to give a bad reference in the US. I guess this is why a mediocre reference = a bad reference here.

but susser tod is in mexico, so I wonder if it is ok to give bad references there. I hear in europe they are more real references.

Do you mean, references by the employer to a new employer? (IE: my ex boss giving references to my new employer?)

Well, here they are not illegal, if you did a bad job, your next employer will know about it.

However, corruption here is everywhere. A little background, when you get fired without a reason (you met all the performance requirements on your contract, but yet they didn't want you in there), the law states that you must get paid 3 months of wage for being fired without a justification, plus, 20 days of wage per each year that you worked there.

So, for example, if they lay off someone that had worked there for four and a half years, they will have to pay that person 6 months of wage (3 months + 4.5 x 20 = 90 = 3 months). Usually, to avoid paying you that much, they will blackmail you. Quit, instead of being fired, and you'll get positive references, fight for what the law says you should get for getting fired, and you'll get a bad one.

In my case what I did, I accepted the 3 months of wage, and gave up the month and a half that I was entitled to because of the years I had worked there. So I'll end up getting 3 months of wage, instead of 4 and a half, but a possitive reference...
