avman
My wife is diabetic and took the birth control pill for many years. She has always monitored her blood sugars closely and her doctor never expressed any concerns with her use of the pill.
BetterKarma
My friend is diabetic and she's on BCPs. She has type 1 diabeties. There are more risks involved in taking BCPs if you are diabetic, however, it doesn't mean you can't be on BCPs. Make an appt with your physcian and talk about all the different types of BCPs that are safer for women with diabeties. You will probably have to try out a few of them to see which one has the least amount of affects on you.
rose2summer
Read this article: The results of the second study showed that 18% of the women who took birth control pills eventually got macroalbuminuria, which is when the kidneys do not properly filter out waste products and is a sign of kidney damage. Only 2% of the women who were not taking birth control pills got this condition. The use of birth control pills appears to put women with diabetes at risk for kidney disease, although larger studies are needed to fully examine the effects of taking birth control pills on kidney function. Physicians should remain cautious about prescribing birth control pills to women with diabetes. link removed Hugs, Rose
avman
That is a very good article Rose. Our doctor told us that she was more concerned about the health risks of an unplanned pregnancy than any risk of birth control. With each of our babies we practically had an army of doctors monitoring the pregnancy throughout the term and they started high risk care immediately upon conception.
