low energy problem

Recommended Posts

I started working out at the beginning of the summer and I noticed that I had a lot more energy. I could wake up earlier with ease and have energy to last me through the day. Even though I'm still working out, this past semester I seem to have lost it. I have so much trouble waking up. I can easily hit the snooze button for an hour. I always want to workout before I start my day but I'm finding it so hard to get myself out of bed. Once I'm up and moving I'm generally fine until about late afternoon/early evening. Then I feel like I could go to bed for the night. Of course by the time I actually go to bed around 10 or 11, I have a little more energy. Anybody have any tips as to how to get my energy level up? Thanks!

I don't drink anything with caffeine. I only drink water really. Caffeine makes my heart pound too much and makes me shake. My protein intake could probably be higher...but today for example I had a 12" sub from subway (a healthy one) that had lots of protein then an hour later I was ready to go to sleep.

Something has changed with your routine from last summer. Think back to what may be different whether lack of vitamins, protein (which you should stay on top of if you are working out...strengthens your muscles). Did you change any supplements? You could be anemic....do you get enough calcium?

Those are good points. I can't remember, but I think I may have been taking my multivitamin over the summer and stopped once I started graduate school. Also I've been warned that I'm already at risk for osteoperosis (spelling?) because I was born allergic to milk and now I'm lactose intolerant so it's hard for me to get a normal amount. I've tried those Viactiv chews but they really aren't the tastiest thing, haha. I'm going to try taking my multivitamin again and see if it helps.

I think it may be a mood thing too. I'm away from home for school in a place I'm not crazy about. I wonder if my energy will come back when I'm home for the summer. The only problem with that theory is that I hated it here much more at the end of last semester than I do now.

Any suggestions on healthy foods I can eat for protein? I don't cook so I rely on fruits, veggies, and frozen foods, haha.

Yeah, it's kinda hard to get out of bed when you aren't "happy". That may be playing some factor in it, and your class/study load may be heavier and taking away energy.

I would start taking your multivitamins again. You may want to talk to a pharmacist as well to make sure you are getting the right amounts. Taking too much of certain vitamins can also have a reverse effect so to speak.

As for proteins, be certain to get plenty of lean meats: poultry, fish, and pork. You also want to get in some red meats, however limit the amount you do intake because they can make you feel sluggish. Other great sources of protein are eggs or nuts, especially almonds. Peanuts and walnuts are more "fattier", although if you had to pick one of the two choose peanuts. Make sure to have something to eat at least a 1/2 hour before you begin your workout. My trainer suggested a piece of meat or a handful of almonds. Also after you work out, do the same. Just enough to keep your strength and energy. You mention that you drink plenty of water, be sure to drink plenty during your workout when you lose most of your hydration. And of course, stretch before and after. I found if I didn't really stretch immediately afterwards I would become tired.

Has your doctor ever suggested any type of supplement because you are lactose intolerant?

Now that I've read your post, I think I need more protein earlier on in my day. Over the summer I'd workout, then eat egg beaters and turkey bacon before work. Now I may or may not work out in the morning but I just have a SlimFast or a lean pocket in the morning before I run out to school or my internship. Unfortunately, I don't have the time to eat a full breakfast before I go. I have to take this pill in the morning on an empty stomach and I can't eat for an hour so it makes things very difficult. Also with the fish and walnuts, I used to be allergic. Last semester I was told I'm not but I haven't tried eating them yet, I'm still nervous.

My doctor is the one that put me on Viactiv chews, but I'll ask him for something else the next time I go back. I should have an appointment for the next time I go home because I've also been getting a lot of headaches. I seem like a mess, don't I? haha. I really am a healthy person, I swear

You're not a mess LOL

As goofy as this sounds, do you wear contacts or glasses? Or have you had your vision checked lately? I wonder because a) you have no energy, and b) you are having headaches. Headaches are draining within themselves, but if you add in all the studying you're doing, which could be straining your eyes (and making you tired, no energy) you could need something as simple as a reading prescription.

Well, the medication does put you on a tight schedule. As goofy as this sounds, maybe it's the medication he has you on? Would that coincide with anything??

Glad to hear you're going in for a check up though. You do sound healthy, but there are definitely somethings your doctor needs to know about to get to the bottom of all this.

Everytime I've had my eyes checked, I've had perfect or near perfect eyesight so I don't have contacts or glasses. I might be due for a check up for that too.

The medication is actually supposed to give me more energy. I went in with a problem like this awhile ago and we found out I had hypothyroidism so that's why I'm on the medication.

It could be the larger workload from school too, this semester is much harder than last. I bet it's a combination of a lot of things.

By the way, thanks so much WildChild for responding regularly like this! You've been very helpful!
