Being screwed over...Update

Recommended Posts

I have worked at the same job for 4 1/2 years now. Since I graduated college I have been looking for a job that is more in my field, but have had little success...

I used to love my job, until about 6 months ago. I have really started to hate the place I work at...

It started when the president of the company was fired, and everyone below him was picked off one by one and replaced. The new management are all just horrible. There is just so much corruption and favoritism there that it sickens me.

This place pays on peace rate. So how much you are paid depends on how fast you can move, and very much on what job you are doing. Almost the whole time I've worked there I have run one machine. Well recently I have been booted off that machine and onto the toilet truck. The person who took my job is my direct supervisor's best friend and drinking buddy. Now I unload toilet trucks, insanly hard work, for 1/3 of the pay. It's not the hard work that I'm upset about. I don't mind working hard, it's the pay cut that upsets me.

They strenousity of the job is taking a toll on me though. I come home from work and don't want to do anything but lay on the couch, my back and legs hurt all the time. I wake up in the morning so sore from unloading toilets the day before that it hurts to get out of bed, but I have to get out of bed and go unload more toilets.

My direct supervisors are drunks, and their drinking buddies all work there and get treated like royalty. (Most of them haven't even been there as long as me.) I went to my supervisors and they told me it all has to do with seniority. I'm not stupid, I know that's a lie. So I went to the production manager and she lied through her teeth to me too. She told me I've been on the toilet truck because I'm one of the few people there that is young and healthy enough to do that. There are plenty of healthy people there. There are several who just got out of high school. She also told me they were getting behind on the job I used to do, so within a week I'd be back on it. That was three weeks ago.

There is a girl who works there who is a little slow. One of my supervisors has called her a retard. I think this is just disgusting and very inapropriate.

The tolets we unload off the truck have black mold growing on the boxes. I showed the production manager and she told me "Well just don't touch your face after getting it on your hands." I'm still breathing it!

One lady who worked there for quite a while threw her back out on the toilet truck. She got a Dr.'s excuse saying she couldn't unload toilets anymore, and they fired her.

I have seen people get injured on the job and management doesn't even bother to fill out an accident report...

This is just the tip of the iceberg. I could go on and on. I get up some mornings and want to cry because I don't even want to go to work. I used to love it there, until this new management took over, now it's nothing but a hell hole.

I have seriously thought of anonymously reporting them to OSHA, the Labor Board, etc. Should I?

You could, but I'd have another job lined up if I were you. It sounds like they would promptly fire you if they knew it was you. No it isn't legal, but you are still out of a job. You would until you go through many years of filing a lawsuit, litigation proceedings, depositions, etc before you'd see a dime of money. And trust me, litigation absolutely sucks.

So I'd start looking for a new job. Then do what you need to do to report the violations.

I know the situation at work won't change anytime soon, sadly. I just can't believe the complete 180 this company has done in a short six months. It just goes to show how a few people can ruin a good thing.

The fact that I can't get another job isn't helping. I havr applied at a lot of places, some within my field, and some not. I just want out of my present situation. The reason I keep getting turned down for other jobs is because I can't get a driver's license. (It's medical, I didn't break the law.)

Not driving doesn't hinder me though. I am very mobile. The people who do the hiring at these places don't seem to consider mass transit, and the fact that I have two perfectly good legs. I walk to work now, and home from work about half the time. It just stinks that this small medical problem holds me back...

I agree with avman that you should first proceed to look for new employment, and then you should make a list of the violations and report them to the better business bureas, board of labor and OSHA.

My question to you is, why are you unloading tiolets with a college degree??

I'm confused about why you are getting turned down at other jobs for no drivers license. Are they coming right out and asking you if you have one? I don't understand why they would care as long as you can guarantee you will show up at work every day.

But anyway, you might consider talking briefly to an employment lawyer. They can tell you what typically happens in these cases and whether your allegations have merit.

Why am I unloading toilets with a college degree? I don't really know. Before I graduated the president of where I work now told me I would be moving up (out of factory and into the office) after college, obviously he was bull****ing me.

No where else wants to hire me. The most common reason is because I don't drive. Other reason seems to be lack of expirience. I don't understand how I am to get expirience if no one will hire me.

I applied for a job in package design last week. Without even looking at my aplication the director of personel said "We only hire designers with art degrees." He said it in a very condescending tone. I told him I have an art degree and he seemed very surprised. He then looked at my app, and said "Oh, I see."

It isn't by choice to unload toilets. I just can't seem to get anything else at this point.

I can't wait till my tarot deck gets published. Then hopefully I'll never have to lift another toilet again...

Well, i would get out of there as soon as possible. If you are not happy in your situation, then change it. And as for going for art jobs, just insist that you have a degree. Just because you have a degree, does not mean that you are automatically entitled to a job, although you "should" be, but that's not the way employers see it. There are thousands like you, who have graduated with an Art degree, and who are all looking for a job. At the end of the day, you just have to be pushy.

I don't know much about the art field... what kinds of jobs can you get with a degree in art?

Why don't you drive? (just curious) and is there a good public transportation system where you live? How does this not driving issue come up at interviews? I've never been asked if I drive/have a car.

I never said that I am entitled to a job because I have a dregree. I am well aware there are thousands like me. My degree is being put to good use with my freelance work. I am building two websites right now (for pay). I have some senior protraits lined up, and I may be shooting a wedding here soon. I'm also trying to get my tarot cards published.

I have looked applied for two art jobs, the package design job and another job as a web designer. The rest of the jobs I've applied for have been higher paying factory jobs. Like I said, I'd be happy even if it wasn't an art job at this point.

Hope, I don't drive because I have tunnel vision. I only see what is directly in front of me, nothing on the sides. For me to drive would be a hazard. I didn't discover this until I was in my late teens. I actually took driver's ed in high school and failed it. I thought I was just stupid, lol. Then before I went to college I had an eye exam and discovered my affliction. I legally can't have a driver's lisense.

My town has good mass transit. I have no problem getting around.

No need to get defensive, i was just trying to help by saying it from the employers perspective, because unfortunately, they don't see it like they "should" employ you. But anyway, I'll know better than to help you in the future.

Good luck!

How was that being defensive? I was just pointing out that I am not being arogant and expecting anything from an employer, and that my degree is being used. But if you choose not to help me, that is your decision.

The only thing I could tell you is to get a new job. I know how you feel. I am close to my programme graduation, and I will probably still be working minimum wage. I am looking for other employment - but unlike your case I really do enjoy the company I work for so in my case we will see.

You should line up a new job and anonymously report them to OSHA. It may take some time for you to find a new job, but keep trying and never give up. Perhaps you could write why you have no license?

Good luck of all things!
